Automotive Thermostat: Maintaining the Efficiency of Your Automobile
The automotive thermostat plays a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency of your fuel-injected automobile. The primary function of an automotive thermostat is to regulate or maintain the level of flow of the antifreeze that is flowing from the radiator to the engine. The regulation of the flow of the antifreeze maintains the normal temperature of the radiator. All of us are familiar with the result of an overheated radiator i.e. an overheated engine that will shut down. On the other hand, an engine temperature that is too cold will cause the fuel mixture to become richer by the addition of more fuel, to compensate.
The function of the automotive thermostat can be briefly described in the following manner: the thermostat closes when the engine becomes cold. This results in the engine coolant returning back to the engine through the by-pass tube instead of circulating through the radiator that results in warming up of the engine. The engine gradually achieves the normal temperature and the thermostat opens to facilitate the circulation of the engine coolant through the radiator. Sometimes the temperature of the coolant in the radiator may drop too low. When this happens, the thermostat closes to maintain the existing temperature so that it remains within the operating range.
An automotive thermostat is inexpensive and therefore easy to replace when they develop a minor problem or a defect that impairs their normal functioning. Some of the common problems that may interfere with the normal functioning of a thermostat are; a rust or a calcium build-up in the cooling system, the thermostat stuck open due to some cause or when the thermostat cannot close properly or is tightly shut and cannot be opened when the need arises. These problems, minor as they may appear, may leave your vehicle, and as a result you, stranded in the middle of nowhere. So, never ignore even the slightest problems that may appear in your automotive thermostat.
There has been major advancement in the technology involving automotive thermostat in the recent past. The recent versions of the automotive thermostat have greater operating reliability in emergency situations and hence may save you from situations such as being stranded by the side of the road.
